The Society of Math Majors UPLB held its first semester Orientation last August 7, 2017, Monday at Jollibee Grove, Los Baños, Laguna with the ‘star magic’ inspired theme and the tagline Your Legacy Awaits. The event was attended by 27 UPLB students of BS Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Mathematics and Science Teaching – Mathematics Major. The attendees consists of batches from 2012 up to 2017 whom the society was very lucky to welcome freshmen of this year. SMM Chairperson Freddie Bhoy Ayo hosted the orientation and imparted a renewed aura all throughout the event after the opening performance of selected resident members. Joined by the society’s active members, newly-elected Junior Adviser Inst. Kyrell Vann Verano and Senior Adviser Dr. Virgilio Sison were also present at the event. Sison, who is the re-elected SMM Senior Adviser, delivered the welcoming remarks. “I am encouraging everyone, most importantly the young ones, yung mga freshmen na nandito ngayon, to explore the world of Mathematics; see the beauty behind it at ang pagsali sa acad org na tulad ng SMM ay isang magandang avenue for that”, Sison emphasized on his opening message. Robert Teruel, SMM member Batch dx/dt, commemorated the society’s history through a hilarious but sincere monologue. The legacies that the society clamored to convey started to be viewed as SMM Vice Chairperson Lux Mareve Manalo presented the society’s activities as an academic organization in UPLB. These activities include Brainjamming, Pneumathics, It’s Your Turn, Mathenyo, Outreach Programs, Alumni Vs. Residents, and Intra-Organizational Quiz Contests – Utakan and Mathinikan. Kelsey Lopez and Don Michael Pabilonia, SMM members batch dx/dt and Slope, respectively, serenaded the orientees while having their dinner. SMM Juror Jay Paolo Pascasio spoke about the society’s achievements over the past academic year. The society’s morale boosted as the orientees were wowed amidst Pascasio’s presentation as the academic achievers of the society were flashed on the screen. The competitive spirit of the society on interorganization sports festival – PalaCASan 2016 – was also highlighted as Pascasio rooted to some members who drew mark on the said sports festival. Society’s Alumna Almira Lae Samiano, Batch Slope, and Resident Member Cheska Ilarde, Batch dx/dt, inspired everyone on the event after delivering their Alumni and Resident Member Testimonial, respectively. “Yung confidence na binigay sa’kin ng SMM ang hinding hindi ko makakalimutan lalo na’t ngayong graduate na ako. Hinihintay kayo ng org, the legacies that were passed on are now waiting you all. Kayo ang makakadiscover non, pagpasok niyo ng SMM”, Samiano emotionally stated as she ended her testimonial. Ilarde, on the other hand, spoke about herself being shameful because of joining an organization too late in her college life. She said, “Joining SMM made me see college more than just education. Masaya mag-org; masaya mag-SMM. My third year here in LB was the best by far and it’s a shame it took me two years bago mag-decide na sumali ng org. Well, better late than never.” SMM Membership Committee Head Mary Ann Coloma concluded the orientation through giving the closing remarks. Coloma motivated the orientees about undergoing the process and finally join the growing family of the society. She also stated that the learning, the values of the organization, and the legacies that await inside the organization are the ones worth joining for. After two weeks of presentation period and a week of reporting process, five new members have been added on the growing family of the society; Batch Union namely Toni-Jaiceeleene Monserrat (BS MATH, 14); Jereanne Morales (BS AMAT, 15); Rodolph Victor Delos Reyes (BS MST – Math Major, 15); Janna Lea De Torres (BS MST – Math Major, 15); and Lexlie Anne Ilao (BS MST – Math Major).
